IBPS PO vs SBI PO: Exam Pattern, Selection Process and Preparation
Compare IBPS PO and SBI PO preparation demands, understand why their notifications and mock patterns must be checked separately, and build a shared foundation with exam-specific practice.
Should you prepare for IBPS PO and SBI PO together, or choose one? Their overlapping subjects make combined preparation practical, but treating their papers as identical can create costly mistakes in timing, descriptive work and later selection stages.
This is a preparation comparison, not a vacancy or application-date announcement. Use the applicable official advertisements and corrigenda for exact questions, marks, eligibility and selection rules. A future recruitment cycle may change the scheme.
The basic difference
| Point | IBPS PO | SBI PO |
|---|---|---|
| Recruitment route | IBPS Common Recruitment Process for participating banks | Separate recruitment by State Bank of India |
| Preparation overlap | English, Quant, Reasoning and later awareness/writing needs | Substantial subject overlap, with its own paper structure |
| What to verify | Current PO/MT notice and later instructions | Current SBI PO advertisement and later instructions |
| Why separate mocks matter | Follow its section mix, marks and timing | Follow SBI-specific distribution and timing |
Passing one examination does not automatically give eligibility or selection in the other. Applications, documentation, stages and preferences must be handled separately.
Understand the selection sequence
Both preparation plans need to account for preliminary screening and a main examination. Later assessments must be checked in the relevant notice. For example, IBPS issued a personality-test notice in its PO/MT XV cycle, so an old guide that describes only an interview after mains may be incomplete for that cycle.
The SBI PO 2026 advertisement describes Phase I prelims, Phase II mains and a Phase III process including a psychometric test, group exercises and interview. That is a cycle-specific reference, not a permanent promise about every future SBI recruitment.
Compare prelims correctly
The shared foundation is English, Quant and Reasoning. Do not infer the question distribution from the fact that both use those subjects. The SBI PO 2026 notice, for example, specifies 40 English questions, 30 Quant questions and 30 Reasoning questions with separate twenty-minute sections. Use the IBPS notice for its own distribution rather than copying SBI's.
When selecting a mock, check its recruitment-cycle label and section settings. A familiar 30-35-35 template is not automatically appropriate for every bank or year.
Prepare for mains as a separate demand
Mains work generally requires sustained reasoning, more involved data handling, awareness and strong written comprehension. Check the exact names and scope in each notice. The SBI PO 2026 advertisement specifies communication-skills tasks, including email and situation-analysis work and a report-or-precis choice; do not prepare only generic essays for that scheme.
A useful shared habit is to explain an issue clearly in a short paragraph, then adapt the output to the required format. An email needs a purpose and an appropriate closing; a precis needs faithful compression; a report needs organised factual presentation.
A combined preparation plan
Foundation stage
Study arithmetic relationships, comprehension, grammar and reasoning fundamentals together. Maintain a daily banking-awareness routine. These skills transfer better than memorising an exam-specific order of chapters.
Practice stage
Alternate suitable sectional sets and review the cause of mistakes. Introduce longer DI and reasoning sets gradually. Keep vocabulary connected to passages rather than collecting a separate word list for each examination.
Simulation stage
Use separate full mocks under each current scheme. Practise the correct timers, section distribution and descriptive formats. Review whether switching formats creates pacing or selection problems.
Which should you prioritise?
Use eligibility, the applicable schedule, your current readiness and your career preferences. Do not choose solely because someone labels one exam easier. Difficulty varies by paper and candidate; selection also depends on the official process and available positions.
If two stages are close together, protect common revision and use a limited additional block for the nearer exam's format. If one deadline has passed, do not follow a timetable designed around it simply because the article is recent.
Final checklist
- Have you saved both applicable official notifications?
- Do your mocks match their actual patterns?
- Are descriptive tasks matched to the correct notice?
- Have you checked later assessment and document requirements?
- Is awareness preparation continuing before mains?
Conclusion
Prepare the foundation together and simulate the examinations separately. Shared subjects save effort; careful attention to each official scheme prevents that efficiency from becoming a wrong assumption.
