Union Cabinet Extends Jal Jeevan Mission till 2028 with ₹8.69 Lakh Crore Outlay

The Union Cabinet, led by PM Narendra Modi, has extended the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) till December 2028 to ensure 100% functional tap connections.
The mission's financial outlay has been revised upward to ₹8.69 lakh crore, with the central government's share increasing to ₹3.59 lakh crore.
Under 'Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0', the focus will shift from infrastructure building to sustainable service delivery and 24x7 water supply in rural areas.
A new digital framework titled 'Sujalam Bharat' will be launched to map the entire rural water supply chain and assign a unique 'Sujal Gaon' ID to every village.
Exam Perspective: Currently, 81.61% of rural households (15.80 crore out of 19.36 crore) have access to tap water; the extension aims for universal coverage.
