Government Announces Five-Year Transition Strategy from WPI to Producer Price Index
During this transition, the DPIIT will release a revised WPI series with the base year updated to 2022-23 on June 15, 2026, replacing the 2011-12 base year.
The updated WPI basket will expand from 697 to 957 commodities, integrating modern energy sources such as solar, wind, and nuclear electricity.
Unlike WPI, which reflects wholesale prices, the PPI tracks price dynamics at the producer level (factory-gate or farm-gate) for both goods and services.
Moving to PPI aligns India's inflation tracking with global standards, eliminating double-counting issues and providing a more accurate reflection of production costs.
