India's retail inflation, calculated using the Consumer Price Index (CPI), escalated to 3.93% in May 2026 from 3.48% recorded in the previous month of April.
Despite reaching a 16-month high, the inflation rate remains comfortably below the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) medium-term ceiling target of 4.0%.

A structural update was executed with a new base year (2024 = 100), increasing the total quantity of tracked items in the national basket from 299 to 358 (goods increased from 259 to 308, while service items expanded from 40 to 50).
