West Bengal's Legendary Jalbhara Sweet Secures Geographical Indication Status

The famous 'Jalbhara Sweet' (also known as Jalbhora Sandesh), native to Chandannagar in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, has been officially granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
With a rich historical legacy exceeding 220 years, this traditional delicacy represents a crucial milestone in preserving Bengal's culinary heritage and protecting it from duplication.
The GI tag will enhance the global and domestic market value of the sweet, directly benefiting local sweet makers (moiras) in the Hooghly region.
For competitive exams, GI tags of traditional foods reflect the preservation of cultural heritage and regional economic promotion, making them frequent topics of interest.
