Government Rolls Out NAKSHA Initiative to Digitally Map Urban Land Parcels
The Department of Land Resources (DoLR), operating under the Ministry of Rural Development, introduced the NAKSHA initiative (National Geospatial Knowledge-based Land Survey of Urban Habitations).
Integrated into the Digital India Land Records Modernization Programme (DILRMP), NAKSHA provides accurate GIS-based mapping for urban and peri-urban land parcels without altering land ownership titles.
Technical execution is led by the Survey of India alongside National Informatics Centre Services Inc. (NICSI) using aerial drones, ground verification, and GIS integration.
A pilot verification inquiry phase was scheduled from July 16, 2026 to August 14, 2026 across Margao, Cuncolim, and Panaji in the state of Goa.
Exam Perspective: Modernizing urban land registry records reduces legal property disputes, aids municipal property tax planning, and strengthens urban infrastructure development.
