What happened

Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh inaugurated the Integrated Atmospheric Chemistry and Aerosol Toxicity Analysis Laboratory (AATAL) on 24 October 2026. The facility is located at the Delhi branch of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in New Rajinder Nagar, New Delhi.

AATAL has been established under Mission Mausam, an initiative of the Government of India. It operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Earth Sciences and functions as the world's first integrated air-pollution analysis facility specifically designed for the Delhi-NCR region.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by prominent dignitaries including Dr T Srinivasa Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences; Dr A Suryachandra Rao, Director of IITM Pune; and Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology at the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The facility is integrated with IITM’s AIRWISE system, which provides high-resolution air quality forecasts at a spatial resolution of 400 metres for up to 72 hours in advance. AATAL is designed to analyse atmospheric gases, fine particulate matter, metals, toxic compounds, microplastics, and carcinogenic elements to assess cytotoxicity and health risks.

AATAL will perform real-time source apportionment to identify and estimate relative contributions from diverse pollution sources such as vehicular emissions, industrial activity, biomass burning, construction dust, and transboundary pollutants. This empirical scientific data will aid regulatory bodies like the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in implementing targeted actions under mechanisms like the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).

  • Revise the specific spatial resolution (400 metres) and forecast timeline (72 hours) provided by the integrated system.

PrepZen analysis

The launch of AATAL marks a critical shift in India's environmental science strategy from general air quality monitoring to deep chemical and toxicological analysis. By combining real-time source apportionment with high-resolution forecasting via AIRWISE, the facility provides actionable scientific data for policy implementation. For civil services aspirants and competitive exam candidates, questions from this topic will likely test institutional linkages, ministerial oversight under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, and specific technological parameters of Mission Mausam.
