Ladakh Declared India's First 100% Organic Union Territory

Ladakh has officially been declared India's first fully organic Union Territory, becoming completely chemical-free. Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena formally announced the certification, marking a major milestone following Sikkim's historic 2016 state-level organic status.
What happened
Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena formally announced that Ladakh has achieved organic certification, making it India's first Union Territory to be certified 100% chemical-free. The agricultural transition covers both districts of the region, namely Leh and Kargil.
The organic transformation of the region was driven under the ₹500-crore Mission Organic Development Initiative (MODI), which was launched in 2020 to convert subsistence farming into commercially viable organic agriculture. In July 2021, a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the Sikkim State Organic Certification Agency under the MODI scheme to guide the certification process.
To achieve this status, the administration implemented strict measures, including a complete prohibition in July 2026 on the procurement, distribution, sale, marketing, and use of chemical and synthetic fertilisers and pesticides across Ladakh's agriculture. Ahead of the sowing season in March 2026, organic fertilizer consignments were distributed to assist farmers. By July 2026, 207 out of 666 villages had received formal organic certification through a phased program. Key agricultural produce covered in the region includes apricots, sea buckthorn, buckwheat, barley, and various vegetables.
