What happened

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan honoured the crew members of flydubai flight FZ1073, which included Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar. The highest civil honour, the First Class Order of Zayed II, was conferred on Captain Machchhar for safeguarding commercial flight passengers and crew during a critical security incident on September 30, 2026.

During the flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, Captain Machchhar was attacked inside the cockpit by his co-pilot, First Officer Hamam al-Hammami, who struck him with an emergency crash axe in an attempt to execute a suicide hijack plot targeting Ben Gurion Airport. Despite severe head injuries, Captain Machchhar managed to unlock and open the cockpit door from the inside, allowing crew and passengers to subdue the attacker.

The aircraft was safely diverted for an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, with zero fatalities. Captain Machchhar received initial medical treatment in Tabuk before being airlifted to Abu Dhabi for specialized care. The honours were presented in Abu Dhabi by UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
