Evolution of State Bank of India from Presidency Banks

An overview of the historical evolution of the State Bank of India, tracing its roots from the early British-era Presidency Banks through the Imperial Bank of India to its nationalization in 1955.
What happened
The origins of the State Bank of India trace back to the early modern banking institutions established in British India, known as the Presidency Banks. These institutions operated in the three major administrative presidencies of Bengal, Bombay, and Madras. They initially functioned as quasi-central banks and held the right of note issue until the enactment of the Paper Currency Act, 1861.
The three foundational institutions were the Bank of Bengal, established in 1806; the Bank of Bombay, established in 1840; and the Bank of Madras, established in 1843. On January 27, 1921, these three banks were amalgamated under the Imperial Bank of India Act, 1920, to form the Imperial Bank of India. The Imperial Bank operated as a commercial bank while also performing central banking functions until the establishment of the Reserve Bank of India on April 1, 1935.
Following the recommendations of the All India Rural Credit Survey Committee and the passage of the State Bank of India Act, 1955, the Imperial Bank of India was nationalized and transformed into the State Bank of India on July 1, 1955. Later, the State Bank of India (Subsidiary Banks) Act, 1959, enabled SBI to take over banks of erstwhile princely states as subsidiaries. On April 1, 2017, five remaining associate banks and Bharatiya Mahila Bank were merged into SBI.
