98.44% of ₹2,000 Banknotes Successfully Returned to the Banking System
The total value of these notes in circulation has plummeted from ₹3.56 lakh crore in May 2023 to just ₹5,551 crore by February 28, 2026.
Despite the withdrawal from circulation, the RBI reiterated that the ₹2,000 notes continue to remain legal tender.
This high return rate signifies a nearly complete phase-out of the high-value currency from the general money supply.
