Cabinet Greenlights ₹37,500 Crore Incentive Package for Coal Gasification Projects

The Union Cabinet has approved a financial outlay of ₹37,500 crore to promote surface coal and lignite gasification projects across India.
The scheme provides a financial incentive of up to 20% of the plant and machinery cost, disbursed in four installments based on project milestones.
The primary goal is to gasify 100 million tonnes (MT) of coal by 2030 to reduce the import of expensive chemicals and fuels like methanol and ammonia.
This initiative aims to transform coal into synthesis gas (syngas), which serves as a critical raw material for the production of urea and synthetic natural gas (SNG).
By transitioning to 'coal-to-chemical' ecosystems, the government seeks to improve domestic energy security and stabilize the trade balance.

Key Facts / Static GK

Coal accounts for over 55% of India's energy mix.
Syngas: A mixture primarily containing Hydrogen and Carbon Monoxide.
India holds one of the world's largest coal reserves (~344 billion tonnes).
