Supreme Court Sanctioned Judge Strength Expanded to 38 via Presidential Ordinance

President Droupadi Murmu approved a strategic expansion in the judicial capacity of the Supreme Court of India, raising the maximum sanctioned strength of judges from 34 to 38.
The increase, which includes the Chief Justice of India (CJI), was officially enacted through the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, 2026.
This ordinance directly amends the foundational Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956, to help the apex court manage its growing case backlog.
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had cleared this proposal on May 5, 2026, before receiving presidential assent.
