Assam Legislative Assembly passes Uniform Civil Code Bill, becoming the third state to do so
Assam has become the third state in India, and the first in the North East region, to pass the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill.
Prior to Assam, Uttarakhand (in January 2025) and Gujarat had implemented or passed similar UCC legislations.
The UCC aims to establish a common set of civil laws governing marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, and maintenance for all citizens regardless of their religious beliefs.
This legislative move signifies a major push towards legal standardization of civil practices across states, which is of high constitutional significance under Article 44 of the Indian Constitution.
