Surha Tal Declared as India's 100th Ramsar Site on World Environment Day

On World Environment Day, the Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary (Surha Tal), located in the Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh, was officially designated as India's 100th Ramsar Site.
This landmark addition makes Surha Tal the 13th Ramsar Site in Uttar Pradesh and the 2,595th globally, emphasizing its global ecological significance.
India now boasts the highest number of Ramsar Sites in Asia and ranks third globally, trailing only the United Kingdom with 176 sites and Mexico with 144 sites.
Tamil Nadu continues to lead among Indian states with 20 designated wetlands, while Gujarat possesses the largest overall wetland surface area in India.
