RBI Reports 23.5% Decline in Currency Printing Costs for FY26

The Reserve Bank of India announced that its currency printing expenses decreased by 23.5% to ₹4,875.2 crore in FY26 compared to ₹6,372.8 crore in FY25.
The cost reduction is attributed to a lower overall indent (order volume) for fresh banknotes during the financial year.
Despite the lower printing costs, banknotes in circulation surged by 11.8% to reach ₹41.23 Lakh Crore as of March 2026, with the ₹500 note being the most dominant (85.5% of total value).
Exam Perspective: Illustrates the persistent demand for physical currency in India's economy, as reflected in the rising Currency-to-GDP ratio (12.1% in FY26).
