TRAI Initiates Rollout of 1601-Series Numbering System to Verify Business Calls

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has launched a phased implementation of the 1601-series phone numbering scheme specifically for trusted transactional and service voice calls.
This dedicated series, allocated by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), helps citizens easily distinguish legitimate operational calls from fraudulent attempts.
The 1601-series is strictly meant for non-BFSI commercial entities and government bodies, while explicitly prohibiting any promotional or marketing communications.
Exam Significance: Standardized series numbering is a key regulatory step to strengthen consumer cyber-safety and curb unwanted telemarketing spam.
