What happened

Axis Bank has become the first Indian bank to support Apple Pay, enabling its credit cardholders to make contactless and digital payments. The rollout allows users with Axis Bank credit cards on the Mastercard and Visa networks to add their credentials to Apple Wallet and execute transactions across retail outlets, mobile applications, and web platforms.

The service is functional across iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch devices, while Mac desktop and browser support is scheduled for release in upcoming phases. At the time of rollout, the service does not support Axis Bank debit cards, RuPay network cards, or the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

Security for transactions relies on tokenisation rather than storing actual card numbers on Apple servers or user hardware. Purchases are authorized using an encrypted Device Account Number alongside on-device authentication via Face ID, Touch ID, or device passcode, removing the requirement for SMS-based One-Time Passwords (OTPs) or physical PIN entries at checkout.

Cardholders can configure their cards directly through Apple Wallet or via the Axis Bank Mobile Banking application. Major payment aggregators including Razorpay, Pine Labs, Cashfree, and PayU have integrated backend support, while merchants such as Apple Store locations, Blinkit, Croma, Reliance brands, Tata 1mg, and Zomato accept the payment method.

PrepZen analysis

The introduction of Apple Pay in India marks a key milestone in device-based contactless card tokenisation. While India's domestic digital retail transactions are overwhelmingly handled by the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Apple Pay focuses on high-value card payment infrastructure through contactless POS terminals and in-app checkouts. For banking and finance examinations, candidates should pay close attention to the mechanics of device-level tokenisation, two-factor authentication alternatives like biometrics, and the competitive distribution of credit cards across leading private lenders.
