AIADMK's Internal Strife and Tamil Nadu's Political Flux
a
profound internal upheaval , teetering on the brink of a decisive
split. The party's 47 MLAs are currently split over their allegiance to General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, who previously served as Leader of Opposition. This deep-seated schism
intensified with both factions submitting written claims to Pro-tem Speaker M.V. Karuppiah. While the exact strength of each group remains unclear , the dissenting faction, spearheaded by former Ministers C.Ve. Shanmugam and S.P. Velumani, appears to hold sway with more legislators. This group has explicitly
declared its intention to support the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay's recent meeting with Mr. Shanmugam and his colleagues subtly underscored his leanings
towards the dissidents, a move seen as part of his broader political outreach
efforts. This timely engagement holds particular significance as the Chief Minister faces an impending
trust vote in the Assembly. The Palaniswami camp, meanwhile, asserts that all 47 legislators had previously designated
him as their leader, citing written consent. They also invoke the Supreme Court's May 2023 ruling in the Shiv Sena case, which affirmed the political party’s authority , not the legislature party's, in appointing
leaders and whips. With Palaniswami as General Secretary, his supporters maintain the rival faction's office-bearer announcements are invalid , especially since he has already appointed his own whip . The Palaniswami group is reportedly considering
invoking the 1985 anti-defection law to seek
disqualification of any rebel legislators who might contravene the whip during the trust vote. An alternative for the Shanmugam-Velumani faction could be a merger with the TVK, provided they can garner
sufficient support. Ultimately, Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar faces the complex task of adjudicating
these claims, a decision that will shape the continued political flux in Tamil Nadu. This internal strife
highlights the dynamic and often tumultuous nature of state politics.
