India's Demographic Transition: Navigating Growth and Ageing

Share: WhatsApp
India is currently navigating a significant demographic transition , a fact unequivocally highlighted by the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) bulletin, 2024. The data presents compelling evidence of a considerable deceleration in the country's population growth. While many experts project several more decades of growth, the precipitous decline in the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) to 1.9, which is below the replacement level of 2.1, mandates immediate strategic foresight . This shift is primarily attributed to a falling birth rate, alongside a marginal reduction in the death rate. India's birth rate has notably decreased from 21 in 2014 to 18.3 in 2024, indicating a broader societal move moving away from older norms towards smaller families, influenced by factors such as enhanced education, increased urbanisation , and improved access to contraception .This demographic pivot suggests that India is moving away from a 'population explosion' scenario towards one characterised by an ageing populace and a potential contraction in workforce expansion . Despite this future outlook , India is still positioned to leverage its substantial demographic dividend . With a median age of 29.2 years, considerably lower than nations like China (40.2 years), a significant proportion of its population remains youthful . Projections for 2026 indicate approximately 370-380 million youth aged 15-29, constituting roughly 27% of the total population, and over 65% of the population being below 35 years. However, the SRS report also draws attention to pressing internal disparities . Performance metrics reveal a stark contrast between urban and rural areas, with southern states consistently outperforming their northern counterparts . Although notable improvements in child survival rates are evident , with the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) falling to 24, certain high-burden northern states continue to exhibit elevated IMR figures. To foster national convergence and effectively manage these emerging challenges , targeted policy interventions are imperative , focusing on bolstering healthcare infrastructure , increasing public awareness , and expanding educational facilities in these lagging regions. India must proactively prepare for the requirements of a future "greying nation" before the window of its demographic advantage begins to close down .
