Political Quagmire in West Bengal: The Trinamool Congress in Disarray

Share: WhatsApp
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) finds itself in a profound state of internal turmoil following its recent electoral setback in West Bengal. This period of disarray has been underscored by a significant leadership challenge within the Legislative Assembly. Ritabrata Banerjee has been officially designated as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP), asserting the backing of a considerable faction of 58 out of 80 TMC MLAs. This development directly contravened the earlier nomination by Abhishek Banerjee, the party’s national general secretary and Mamata Banerjee's nephew, who had proposed veteran Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay for the role. With covert support from the incumbent BJP, Ritabrata Banerjee successfully contested this decision. The controversy deepened when the TMC had previously expelled Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha, two of its MLAs, citing anti-party activities. These expulsions came after their allegations to the Speaker that their signatures on Abhishek Banerjee’s letter were fraudulent . Subsequent investigations by Assembly officials revealed marked discrepancies between the submitted documents and official records, prompting the government to initiate a CID probe. Ritabrata Banerjee has framed his ascendancy as LoP as a 'collective endeavour against individualism,' explicitly directing his criticism towards Abhishek Banerjee while publicly affirming his allegiance to Mamata Banerjee. The party is currently experiencing a significant exodus of functionaries , even as its rank and file, including Abhishek Banerjee himself, continue to grapple with physical violence. The TMC’s decade-long tenure in power has been steadily undermined by rampant corruption, authoritarian governance, the suppression of dissent , and persistent violence against women. These issues had progressively eroded public trust in both the administration and the party. A critical factor in the party's internal schism was Abhishek Banerjee’s increasingly prominent role, which alienated a generation of senior leaders instrumental in the party's formation. Suvendu Adhikari, now the BJP Chief Minister, once a trusted confidant of Mamata Banerjee, epitomized this resentment . His vulnerability to investigations by central agencies into corruption charges further complicated matters. While the TMC had its own history of leveraging state resources for political gain, it has proved unable to hold up against the BJP’s even more aggressive political strategies. The ongoing internal conflict is expected to precipitate protracted legal battles over the legitimacy of rival TMC factions. This episode starkly illustrates West Bengal’s endemic political culture, which is often characterized by violence and unprincipled opportunism , as seen in Ritabrata Banerjee’s own political journey from Marxist to TMC and now, seemingly, a BJP-backed LoP.
