Global AI Divide: Challenges and the Urgent Need for Accountability

Share: WhatsApp
The burgeoning investment and widespread proliferation of Artificial Intelligence technologies are revealing significant global disparities , as highlighted by a recent UN Preliminary Report. A critical fault line exists between the Global North, which is poised to reap the majority of benefits from advanced AI models, and the Global South, which struggles with regulatory frameworks for these sophisticated systems. Emerging nations face an unenviable dilemma : either embark on capital-intensive endeavors to secure a role in AI development or passively give in to the agenda set by a handful of influential corporations that largely dictate AI access and application. This unequal playing field is exacerbated by the prerequisites for AI leadership, including abundant power resources, highly capitalized firms employing scarce, well-compensated talent, and a relentless push through policy hurdles with competitive zeal .While AI holds immense potential for scientific breakthroughs, its rapid evolution far outpaces the development of social media, an industry that, despite having time to foster responsible practices, ultimately deformed public discourse and imperiled democracies. The current pace makes it uncertain if even powerful nations can genuinely curtail AI's trajectory . Already, instances of corporate irresponsibility have led to severe consequences, such as AI models ensnaring individuals in dangerous parasocial relationships, significantly eroding the financial viability of news media, and unleashing a deluge of deepfakes that undermine public trust in information. Furthermore, the deep intertwining of Artificial General Intelligence aspirations with global financial mechanisms presents potentially catastrophic economic risks. Governments must prioritize calling out these firms and holding them to account , as a passive stance, even if the Global South's concerns are disregarded, carries far graver implications. India's past experience with technological dependency, exemplified by the US pulling back access to advanced cyber-security models, underscores the urgent need for nations to stand up for themselves . Viewing AI solely as a geostrategic advantage overlooks its substantial capacity for widespread harm, necessitating proactive measures.
