Updating Economic Indices: A Crucial Step for India's Economy

Share: WhatsApp
The economic indicators for India have recently undergone significant enhancements, finally presenting a more contemporary and accurate portrayal of the nation's financial health. Following similar updates to the national accounts, Consumer Price Index (CPI), Wholesale Price Index (WPI), and Index of Industrial Production (IIP) earlier this year—albeit with considerable prior delays—the Index of Core Industries (ICI) has now also been modernized . June’s data introduces a revised series for the ICI, featuring an updated base year, the incorporation of an additional sector, and adjusted methodologies and weights. This upgrade is a commendable step towards greater transparency .The performance of these foundational industries offers a critical barometer of the economy’s underlying strength. Notably, the ICI now tracks nine sectors instead of the previous eight, marked by the significant inclusion of iron ore. Revisions have also been made to the measurement of steel and coal production to weed out earlier instances of double-counting, ensuring more precise data. The recalibration of sectoral weights naturally accompanies the new addition but also underscores a broader evolution in economic activity. For instance, the relative importance of coal and natural gas has almost halved, now accounting for approximately 5.6% and 3.8% respectively. Conversely, electricity's prominence has surged , now constituting over 30% of the index, up from under 20%. This shift likely reflects the growing contribution of renewable energy sources to electricity generation, even as overall demand continues to pick up .Despite a robust 5% growth recorded in June 2026, marking a five-month high for the index and suggesting Indian industry might be shaking off the West Asia crisis-induced downturn , a deeper look reveals certain nuances . Strong figures for iron ore (43.9%) and electricity (9.8%) largely stemmed from a statistical base effect, given their contraction in the previous year. It remains uncertain if this positive momentum will persist once this base effect fades away . The updated series also brings to light persistent structural issues, such as the continuous contraction of crude oil and natural gas sectors for 18 and 24 months, respectively. This dichotomy raises concerns: either India lacks these resources, or it possesses them but struggles with economical extraction. Such a scenario highlights a serious systemic deficiency . While these updates are welcome, a more holistic statistical reorganization, possibly involving the transfer of WPI and ICI oversight to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, where CPI and IIP currently fall under , remains a logical next step that could still be pursued .
