A Crisis of Collapsing Infrastructure

Share: WhatsApp
A critical examination of India's infrastructure reveals a troubling pattern of systemic neglect and inadequate maintenance, where assets are often treated as one-time investments. This deficiency has become starkly evident in recent years, with numerous structural failures across the nation. From collapsing roofs and canopies at major airports in Delhi, Jabalpur, and Rajkot, to a succession of bridge failures in Bihar, the crisis is widespread. Even in tier-I cities, roads have frequently caved in and basements have succumbed to flooding, highlighting a pervasive vulnerability . The post-2000s construction boom, while expanding infrastructure rapidly, paradoxically fell short of commensurate maintenance efforts and administrative oversight. This oversight has further fragmented , exacerbating the problem. The tragic collapses in Bhiwandi offer a poignant microcosm of this national dilemma . The Kohinoor building, designated as dangerous for years, eventually collapsed, claiming ten lives, just as the Jilani building did in 2020. Both incidents occurred during the monsoon season, a non- coincidental timing that underscores the seasonal stress on poorly maintained structures. The Kohinoor's collapse, while undergoing unauthorized repairs and after repeated warnings, represents a significant failure of enforcement. Owners often defy evacuation orders, and residents, faced with the dire alternative of homelessness due to a severe lack of temporary housing or transit camps, reluctantly choose to inhabit unsafe structures. Municipal corporations frequently struggle to carry out demolition orders, which are often politically fraught , while merely issuing warnings to get by on legal liability. The state's typical reactive response—suspending officials, filing criminal cases, and promising audits—is demonstrably insufficient . Such measures offer little more than superficial redress . What is urgently required is a proactive , widespread rehabilitation effort for India's aging and vulnerable buildings. Implementing advanced technologies for continuous structural monitoring and early warning systems is crucial, yet urbanisation has significantly outrun existing municipal capacity. The apparent surge in incidents demands an unwavering focus on enhancing construction quality and fostering a culture of continuous assessment. Truly addressing this national infrastructure malaise necessitates nothing less than a comprehensive urban renewal strategy, rather than piecemeal , reactive interventions that consistently come up against the same tragic outcomes.
