A recent tragic incident, involving the demise of seven individuals and injuries to five in a five-storey building collapse near Delhi University's South Campus, has vividly underscored two pervasive urban challenges. These are the uncontrolled, haphazard expansion of residential zones and the critical deficit of affordable student accommodation in the capital. Annually, Delhi University welcomes over 70,000 new students, with roughly half of them needing budget-friendly housing. The city's infrastructure has demonstrably fallen behind this escalating demand. The University, largely washing its hands of the issue, cites land scarcity, thereby allowing private enterprises to flourish by operating unregulated paying guest facilities and private hostels. In such a competitive environment, maximizing profits often means cramming students into cramped , ill-ventilated spaces, frequently in structures that blatantly disregard building codes and fire safety norms. Upon their arrival, students from across India confront the harsh reality that residing in the capital demands not just a financial tribute but also a compromise on their safety, security, and mental well-being.

The Delhi government's aspirations to position the city as a national educational beacon and leverage its youthful demographic are fundamentally unachievable without proactively addressing the dire need for secure and reasonably priced student housing. While the administration has reacted by suspending five civic officials, initiating a probe, and proposing a stricter policy for structural audits and safety certifications for public activity buildings, these remain reactive interventions. More enduring , systemic solutions are imperative . Previous incidents, such as the 2024 coaching centre flooding that claimed three lives, also prompted investigations and sealing operations, yet holistic change has remained elusive . A collaborative strategy involving the Centre, the Government of NCT, and educational institutions is prerequisite to developing enhanced residential, transit, and learning provisions. The introduction of four-year undergraduate programs will further exacerbate the accommodation crunch. While private hostels can contribute to a multifaceted solution, they must be rigorously regulated. The underlying issues of crumbling urban infrastructure, illegal constructions, and neglected safety inspections must be resolutely dealt with through robust policy frameworks and stringent enforcement to avert future calamities.
