India Launches First Satellite-Tagged Ganges Soft-Shell Turtle Tracking Project
The conservation initiative was executed on Endangered Species Day (May 15, 2026) to scientifically log the seasonal migration patterns and nesting habitats of the species.
The research is spearheaded by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and the Assam Forest Department, with financial support from the National Geographic Society.
Assam is a crucial global hub for freshwater chelonian conservation, hosting 21 of India's turtle species.
